You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me.
We only own a half acre of land on which our house sits. We are surrounded by fenced pasture with tree lines for windbreaks. The brothers own the land adjoining us on one side. We were getting accustomed to hearing frequent gunshots, but they were in the distance. We expected it and it was little more than a nuisance.
One day, I hear, “Bam, Bam, Bam.” It sounded like somebody was right in my backyard shooting. I ran to the door and got there at the same time that my little boy was running in from outside. He looked panicked and said, “Mama, somebody is shooting at me.”
I went out to the backyard to look around when I hear more gunshots. There was a hunter in a tree stand in a little clump of trees in the pasture next to our house. My first thought was, “You’ve got to be kidding me.” I mean, these are my neighbors; surely they wouldn’t put my children in danger. I know how far a bullet can travel and that hunter was too close to my house. I looked to the right where the driveway for the property is and didn’t see a truck from the Lodge. That meant that this hunter was dropped off without a hunting guide. What the heck were they thinking? Remember, I’ve met some of these hunters. They were talking about how they’d never been hunting before and bragging about how much money they’d spent on their shiny new hunting equipment.
That was the end of peace in my house during hunting season. They put hunters in that tree everyday. I had to keep my kids in the house, listening to the gunshots and wondering when a bullet was going to come through the wall.
